Today I’m back with a new craft project that will be showing you how to sew together this pretty zero-waste towelling beauty set.

This sustainable zero-waste towelling set includes: zero-waste make up remover pads, a towelling cloth and a mini drawstring bag.

These zero-waste towelling beauty sets are sustainable, completely re-useable and so simple to make!

They make beautiful gifts and you can even add other items in the bag to make this a really thoughtful gift to give to a loved one.

The Inspiration:

When I was in Japan, everywhere I went I seemed to find a Tenugui.

A Tenugui in Japanese are woven cotton cloths which measure about 34cm by 90 cm, have unfinished edges on both ends and are dyed by hand.

They originate from the Edo period as a cotton towel for ritual cleansing ceremonies and soon became a fashionable practical hand towel at the bathhouses. 

Japanese Tenugui come in a stunning range of colours and designs and embody the rich history of Japanese textile design. You can, however, also find cheaper ones with flannel fabric with kawaii (cute) characters such as Hello Kitty.

Tenugui are now commonly used as Japanese hand towels, washcloths, dishcloths or, even as a stylish wall hanging!

I’m taking inspiration from my Japanese travels and incorporating the famous Tenugui into this zero-waste set.

Here’s why I love this zero-waste beauty set:

1. They are environmentally friendly: Everything in this set can be used again and again. Look at your supplies whilst putting these together. You can use old towels, fabric scraps and leftover ribbons to make something so adorable.
2. Saves Money: Without wasting money on cotton wool pads or wipes you will save so much more money and the environment.
3. They are more effective: I find everything in this set so much more effective than the shop brought alternative. The towelling pads, in particular, are so soft on your skin and ideal for sensitive skin types.
4. Look Cuter: They, of course, look just far prettier than wipes or cotton wool ever could! You can be as creative as you want with the fabric choice, the ribbons and even the stitching. You could also embellish the bags in so many more ways than I have that means it will be forever unique to you.

You will need:

All you need to make this zero-waste beauty set is:

1. a piece of fabric 50 x 46cm (sometimes called a fat quarter) and the same amount of towelling material.
2. You will also need a 50-70cm piece of ribbon.

DIY Cloth Hand-Towel Tutorial (Tenugui)

1. Cut 1 piece of fabric 24 x 29cm and some towelling fabric 24 x 29cm.
2. Pin them together with the right side of the fabric facing you.
3. Machine around all four edges. Use any overstitch your sewing machine has, ensuring any stitch you use is as close as possible to prevent fraying.

DIY Makeup Remover Pads Tutorial

1. Cut a circle pattern to your desired size in both fabric and towelling fabric. I haven’t added a pattern here because it’s really up to you how big you want your cosmetics pad to be. You can either model it on a traditional cotton pad or use a glass as a template. For reference, mine was 8cm in diameter.
2. Head to steps 2 and 3 above to make your zero-waste make up remover pads.

DIY Drawstring Bag Tutorial

1. Cut two pieces of fabric 20 x 20 cm.
2. Sew the sides and bottom seams together, leaving the top open.
3. Turn down the top edge about 2cm, and stitch around to hold it in place leaving a small gap in the seam.
4. Thread a piece of ribbon (50cm) through the gap and knot the ends to secure.
