Carob Mylkshake Smoothie Recipe for GERD and Gastroparesis (Vegan + Dairy Free + Gluten Free)

This Carob Mylkshake Smoothie is so lightly decadent with creamy, sweet, and luscious Carob powder mixed with banana, vanilla, dairy free mylk and other hidden essences.

But first of all, how many of you have heard of Carob?

It’s something I first discovered on my travels through the Holy Land in 2019. Whilst on a tour last year, I remember my guide picking up one of the pods from the ground and I was enchanted.

The Carob Tree, from which Carob comes from, has deep significance in the Holy Land, and there are numerous mentions in the Bible.

Sweet, nutritious Carob is a blessing in the bone-dry Holy Land summer landscape where it’s hard to imagine anything can bloom and grow. As a result, Carob embodies a message of hope and striving for a higher level of humanity.

If you’ve read my recent post about ‘Seeking Whimsy in Hopeless times’ you’ll know that this message of hope is very poignant and significant to me.

Carob Mylkshake Smoothie Recipe for GERD and Gastroparesis (Vegan + Dairy Free + Gluten Free)

This Carob Mylkshake Smoothie is so lightly decadent with the creamy, sweet, and luscious carob mixed with banana, vanilla, mylk and other hidden essences. Carob is caffeine-free, theobromine-free, and a wonderful substitute for those that find cacao difficult to tolerate.

Servings 2

Ingredients

  • 400ml Dairy Free Mylk (I'm using coconut milk)
  • 1 Banana
  • 2 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 tsb Carob Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Maca Powder
  • 1 tbsp Almond Butter
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon

Instructions

  • 1. Cut the banana into smaller chunks and add to your blender. Ripe bananas work best for this if possible.
  • 2. Add all the other ingredients to the blender and blend into your desired consistency.
  • 3. It's best served slightly cold for that lovely mylkshake taste.

As soon as I got back to Jerusalem after that tour, I went on a search high and low to find Carob powder to bring back with me.

To my sheer joy, I stumbled on a health store and purchased two bags to bring home with me.

Since being back in the UK, I have been trialling the myriad of ways you can enjoy Carob.

Of most significance for me, because Carob is caffeine-free and theobromine-free, it is a wonderful substitute for those that find cacao difficult to tolerate.

Whilst chocolate and cacao are literally my favourite things in the world, as my GERD and Gastroparesis worsen, I cannot really indulge in them as much I would like to.

Carob, on the other hand, has medicinally been used for digestion problems including heartburn. In fact, for infants, carob has been used in baby food to help with acid reflux.

In foods and drink products Carob is often used as a chocolate substitute and I am so grateful I discovered it.

Visually, the powder looks just like cacao powder, and it has a lovely malty, sweet taste. In this mylkshake recipe, you’d be mistaken for thinking it really is chocolate!

However, at this point I should just add that if you do not have GERD and Gastroparesis then please feel free to add cacao in place of this!

I’ve been playing around with a mylkshake recipe with Carob powder for a little while now as sometimes I crave sweetness in the afternoon and I know I cannot rely on chocolate for that anymore.

I miss chocolate and cacao so deeply but sometimes life uncovers other gifts such as Carob to experiment with. Used with mylks, bananas, almond butter, vanilla cinnamon and maca in this recipe, it’s actually become my all-time favourite smoothie.

As with anyone who suffers with, GERD and Gastroparesis, I encourage you to play around with what suits you. I’m able to make a batch of this and keep it in the fridge for a few days to enjoy and don’t find it upsets me. If I had the whole thing in one go, it, of course, would be too much.

I really hope you love making this symbolic mylkshake smoothie and reap the benefits of the hope and decadence it delivers your body.

Have you ever heard of Carob before? Are you convinced to try it out as a swap from chocolate and cacao?
