Is there anything more comforting or cosy on a cold winter’s day than a mug of warm aromatic milk? Well, this caffeine-free Chai Latte/Moon Mylk is a blend of dreams that I adore to help with my Raynaud’s Disease!

February is Raynaud’s Awareness Month and, as a result, my February posts will be dedicated to the theme of this awareness. This is the second post from the series for 2021, but I truly think that everyone will find this Chai Latte extremely comforting.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Milk of choice (I'm using Oat milk today)
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 1 Cardamom Pod
  • 1 Allspice
  • ¼  tsp Grated Nutmeg/Syrup/Powder (I'm using Nutmeg syrup)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla pod/Extract
  • ¼  tsp Ashwagandha Powder (optional)
  • 1 tsp Maple Syrup (or any sweetener of choice like honey, brown rice syrup, date syrup etc)

Instructions

  • Add 1 cup of the milk of your choice to a saucepan.
  • Add the Cinnamon Stick, Cardamom Pod, Allspice, Grated Nutmeg/Syrup/Powder and Vanilla to a saucepan on a medium to low heat. You don't want this to boil.
  • Add the Maple Syrup/ sweetener and Ashwagandha Powder if using.
  • After 5 minutes, sieve the mixture into your mug (don't discard the mixture you have sieved. You can always add it to a bath or blend it for other uses).
  • Finish your latte/moon milk with decoration if you wish. I left my cinnamon stick in, and sprinkled the top with a tiny bit of raw cacao.

What is the difference between a Chai Latte and Moon Mylk?

So, what is a Chai Latte?

Chai is the Hindi word for tea. So, chai is simply tea! As for the taste, chai is characterised as a specific type of tea that’s filled with warm spices and then sweetened.

I’m making this a Chai Latte because I’m blending the essence of the tea with a warm, nourishing milk. And so, you can also call this recipe a Moon Mylk.

Moon Mylk is a warm milk with spices, herbs and added nutrients that are all magically blended together to bring about complete serenity and balance. And isn’t the name alone ‘moon mylk’, that little bit more enchanted!

If you haven’t heard of a Moon Mylk before it’s possible you know what a Golden Milk is as they are increasingly making their way into the highstreet chains.

A Golden Milk is one of the earliest types of Moon Mylks that comes from the Indian drink “Haldi doodh” that translates to “turmeric milk” in Hindi.

In Ayurveda traditions from India, Golden Milk is used as a common remedy for insomnia. Today, we’re also utilising the power of these magical ingredients that can also help boost circulation as well as relaxation.

What ingredients are in a Chai Latte/Moon Mylk?

So what goes into this Chai Latte/Moon Mylk? Well, firstly you’ll want to pick your favourite Milk of choice as the base.

Milk (or mylk as many vegans refer to non-dairy forms as) naturally contains a combination of carbs and protein to help induce calming hormones that help you sleep. Today I’m using my go-to of oat milk as I find it a perfect base for this drink. I also love Rice Milk for the natural sweetness or hemp as it is one of the most environmentally friendly plant-based mylks to use.

I then dropped in my spices to this warming milk. I’ve fused this drink with a luscious mixture of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and allspice. You can truly create what your body and soul are craving.

The next common ingredient is an Adaptogen. These are a select group of herbs (and some mushrooms) that support the body’s natural ability to deal with stress. They are called Adaptogens because of their unique ability to “adapt” their function according to the specific needs of the body.

Ashwagandha is one of the most common of these Adaptogens and the one I’m using today (I get mine from The Natural Health Market). It’s wonderful for relieving stress and strengthening the immune system. Isn’t that what we all need right now?

By the way, if you don’t have an Adaptogen, stop at the spices and sweeten to your taste!

The final part is very intuitive because you can really work with your creativity when it comes to taste and adorning the Chai Latte/Moon Milk to your preference. I always love to leave my cinnamon stick in the milk for extra taste. It also makes a lovely natural stirrer!

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

I hope you love every sip of this comforting chai latte/ Moon Mylk and that it’s something that can comfort and nourish you as we come to the snowy and icy finale of this winter season where I am in Northern Hemisphere.

Hi Georgie! I too love to make chai with rice milk to make it sweet without adding sugar.
Thankyou for your recipe. How do you go with chai spices and heartburn? Is it ever a trigger for you? Sometimes I wonder of my nightly chai is a bad idea..

Hi Imogen! I am so sorry I’ve only just seen this! How are you getting on? Like you, yes, rice milk is a fave! So wonderful to utilise its natural sweetening abilities. Interesting you say re spices because I’ve recently been looking into anti-histamine cooking and was so saddened to hear they exclude a lot of that as it can irritate people! This is something I’m going to look into but thank goodness for me I don’t find it triggering. Maybe for you, try a cinnamon stick alone in the milk and don’t steep for too long. Make a note how you feel afterwards and then try leaving it longer next time. Also, could this be a nice afternoon drink? I try to stop drinking after at least 9pm and tend to sleep at 11pm. Let me know how you get on and take such good care ❤️ xoxo
