When was the last time you got away from the urban man-made world altogether, and spent a while wandering around, camping and hiking in the great outdoors?

If you’re one of a select few, you may do that just about every weekend, and may have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the best hybrid campers on the market.

But if you’re anything like the vast majority of people, you probably rarely ever see a forest, unless you happen to be driving past it on the way to another urban or semi-urban environment.

This is pretty unfortunate, all things considered. Because, there’s plenty of evidence that going camping in nature can seriously benefit your overall sense of wellness and well-being, in a variety of different ways.

Here are just a few of the potential wellness benefits of spending time in nature.

  1. A different perspective on your life, its trials, and tribulations

We’ve all got problems that occupy our attention from time to time, and it’s often really difficult to resolve those issues, or to even get a clear sense of what’s going on, when we are fully caught up in the drama and turmoil of the moment.

When you get away from home, work, and the bulk of your usual responsibilities, and wander out into a natural setting for a camping weekend, however, you can end up with a radically different perspective on your life, its trials, and tribulations.

This “different perspective” can be the stuff that trouble-solving dreams are made of. Because it’s often only when we are able to detach ourselves from our concerns that we can really see them clearly, and decide how to act.

  1. An opportunity to really engage with your thoughts, and plan for the future

During the course of normal everyday life, it can sometimes be difficult to even hear yourself think, what with all the sources of distraction and information that we are typically surrounded by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Be aware, though, that constantly drowning out your thoughts with the TV, the radio, and a selection of different podcasts, can come at the cost of self-knowledge – and can cause a good deal of stress and anxiety. It can also make it much more difficult to plan for the future in a meaningful way.

When you go camping – assuming you haven’t brought all your high-tech gadgets with you – you have much more opportunity to be alone with your thoughts, to come to understand yourself, and to plan for the future in a level-headed way.

  1. Restoration and healing, courtesy of mother nature

In recent times, it’s become popular knowledge around the world that the Japanese have a concept of “Forest Bathing,” in which people will spend time walking around woodland areas in order to rejuvenate themselves, and wash away the stress of everyday life.

This resonates perfectly with the advice of the famous outdoorsman John Muir, who advised that we should all “Keep close to Nature’s heart… and break clear away, once in a while, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.”

there’s something about being in nature that seems naturally restorative and healing in and of itself. Try a camping trip, and see whether you notice that, yourself.
