The Northern Lights are one of the most amazing natural features in the world, and they’re on a lot of people’s bucket list. Seeing them can be tricky because even in the best spots in the world, it’s never guaranteed. If you plan well and go at the right time of the year, you have a good chance, but you have to remember that it might not happen. For most people, it’s a once in a lifetime experience seeing the Northern Lights, so if you get the chance to do it, you need to make sure that it’s special. There are a lot of different places that you can visit and different ways to see it, all of them incredible. These are the best ways to see the Northern Lights.
See It From The Air
One of the most popular ways to see the Northern Lights is from the air. There are some great plane trips that you can take (you can read about my experience here) that give you the chance to get a unique view of this natural wonder. You can get a package that includes a lecture about the Northern Lights and how they appear. Then, you’ll head up in the plane and do a few loops around so everybody gets a good chance to see before you land again.
See It From The Sea
The flight package is good, but a lot of people find that it’s over quickly and they wish that they had a bit more time to take it all in. If you want that relaxing Northern Lights experience, you might be better off taking a cruise instead. There are some great packages from companies like Bolsover Cruise Club that will take you all the way through to Norway, so there is no flying involved. It’s a great chance to see the whole country and experience some of the fjords and waterfalls that the area is famous for, as well as seeing the Northern Lights. If you have not visited the region before, a cruise might be a better way to do it because you will get to stop off at a few different places along the way. There is also something very unique about viewing the Northern Lights from the water.
Stay In An Ice Hotel
If you want a unique travel experience, look no further than the ice hotel in Sweden. This incredible one of a kind hotel is made entirely of ice, which doesn’t sound like it would make for a very comfortable stay, but you’d be surprised. It’s in a good location so if you go at the right time of the year (between mid December and March), you will be able to get a good view of the Northern Lights. There are some local guides there as well so if you have any questions, they’ll be happy to answer them.
Go Snowmobiling
If you want to combine your Northern Lights experience with some extreme sports, Canada is the place to go. There are some great snowmobiling trips that you can take in the Northwest Territories of Canada. You get a great sense of freedom as you race around the forest and you can journey across the Great Slave Lake to reach a remote cabin where you get an amazing view of the Northern Lights. There will also be the opportunity to get a seaplane over to Blachford Lake, where you can do some more activities like ice fishing and snowshoeing. If you want to see the Northern Lights but you also enjoy a very active trip, Canada is a great place to go.
Take A City Break
If an activity packed trip to Canada doesn’t excite you, maybe you should consider a city break instead. One of the most popular places for people that want to see the Northern Lights is Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland. If you book into a hotel, you’ll be able to arrange an evening trip outside of the city so you can avoid the light pollution and get a better view of the Northern Lights. While you’re there, you can also visit some of the amazing museums where you will learn about the rich history of the Vikings in Iceland. It’s also worth taking a trip out to the Blue Lagoon Spa where you can relax in the thermal pools and enjoy some fine dining at the on-site restaurant.
The Northern Lights are such an impressive sight to see that you’ll have a great experience wherever you go. But these are some of the best ways to see it if you want to elevate that experience.
